How we started

Our History

Find out how the Mission was established.

The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Johannesburg, South Africa, came into existence in 1994, when Nigeria established full diplomatic relations with South Africa. The Mission was established with a mandate to serve Nigerians and the interest of Nigeria in the Republic of South Africa and its jurisdiction covers six (6) of South Africa’s nine Provinces, namely: Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape. It also renders consular and immigration services to Nigerians in the neighbouring countries of Lesotho and Eswatini, which are accredited to the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria.  In addition, the Consulate General’s remit also extends to the issuance of passports to Nigerians in the entire Southern African region.

Since its establishment, the Mission has witnessed visible improvements in the delivery of services to Nigerians and the general public. The Nigerian community in South Africa ranks as the largest Nigerian diaspora group on the African continent. The community is made up of professionals, notably, Doctors, Engineers, Lecturers, Lawyers and Businessmen, as well as a significant population of Students studying in various higher institutions in South Africa. Although spread across all nine (9) provinces of the country, the largest concentration of Nigerians is found in the major cities of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Nelspruit and Polokwane. As expected, the Mission remains steadfast in fostering excellent people-to-people relations between Nigerians and South Africans, and works assiduously with the Nigerian community to ensure that Nigerians are exemplary in conduct, law abiding and eschew all kinds of vices that may impair inter-community relations and harmony.
